A homemade snuffle mat is a simple enrichment toy that lets a dog “hunt” for kibble or treats by sniffing and foraging through fabric strips. The easiest DIY version uses a rubber sink mat (with holes) as the base and fleece strips tied into those holes to create a dense, shaggy surface.
Grab a rubber sink mat with plenty of holes, fleece fabric (no-sew and won’t fray), scissors or a rotary cutter, and optional treats/kibble for testing. Fleece is ideal because it’s soft on noses and holds shape well once tied.
1) Cut the fleece into strips about 1–1.5 inches wide and 6–10 inches long. Longer strips make a fluffier mat, while shorter strips create a tighter, more challenging forage.
2) Thread one strip through a hole in the sink mat so both ends stick up evenly. Tie a tight single knot or double knot on top of the mat. Repeat in adjacent holes.
3) Keep adding strips until the mat is densely covered. The goal is to hide food easily, so don’t leave large gaps. If the mat starts to curl, spread your knots out evenly and avoid pulling too tightly on one side.
Sprinkle a small portion of kibble or a few treats into the fleece and gently “ruffle” the strips so the food drops down. Supervise the first few sessions, especially if your dog is a chewer, and remove any loose strips immediately. For cleaning, shake out crumbs, spot-clean with mild soap, and air-dry fully.
